Tenth anniversary of AJK, KPK earthquake being observed today

The 10th anniversary of devastated earthquake in Azad Kashmir and Khyber Pakhtunkhuwa is being observed across the country.

Events will be held to pay tributes to the martyrs and other victims of the earthquake.

In Azad Kashmir, it will be a state holiday. Sirens will be blown at 0852 hours to observe two-minute silence.

National Disaster Awareness Day is also being observed today (Thursday) to create awareness amongst masses for better preparedness against disasters.

It was the month of Ramadan when the 2005 Kashmir earthquake was occurred on Oct 8 at 08:50am according to the Pakistan Standard Time in the Azad Kashmir, in which around 87, 000 people died. Center of the 7.6 magnitude earthquake was near Muzaffarabad, which also affected Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Indian-held Kashmir.

The tremors were also felt in the surrounding countries Afghanistan, Tajikistan and western China.
