Yousuf Raza Gilani elected Senate chairman

PPP’s Yousuf Raza Gilani has been elected as Senate chairman while Sardar Saidal Khan Nasir as his deputy unopposed.

No senator except PPP’s Yousuf Raza Gilani and Sardar Saidal Khan Nasir had submitted papers for the election of Senate chairman and deputy chairman.

Earlier, the newly-elected members of the Senate took oath of office today.

Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar is performing the duties of the presiding officer in the Senate session.

As soon as the Senate session started, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf protested and PTI’s Ali Zafar expressed his opinion and said that the session should be postponed until the KP senators come.

Later, Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar administered the oath to the newly elected senators as the presiding officer after which the members signed the roll of members.

The Chairman and Deputy Chairman of the House will also be elected today.

The 10-point agenda of today’s meeting of the Senate has been released according to which the newly elected members will take oath under Article 65 of the Senate Constitution. The members are signing the Senate Roll of Members while the newly elected members of the Senate sworn in.

After that, the chairman of the Senate will be elected.

According to the agenda, if necessary, the chairman of the Senate will be elected by secret ballot and the results of the election of the Senate chairman will be announced. Afterwards, the newly elected Senate chairman will take oath and then the election of the deputy chairman will be conducted. If necessary, the deputy chairman of the Senate will be elected by secret ballot.
