SC constitutionally obliged to protect people’s basic rights: CJP

Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar here on Sunday said the Supreme Court is constitutionally obliged to safeguard the basic rights of the people of the country.

Addressing a ceremony arranged for re-activation of the crucially needed Sewerage Water Treatment Plant (TP-III) at Mauripur, in old city area, he appreciated that the facility will be providing 77 million treated water daily to localities of Mauripur itself along with Lyari, Korangi, Malir and Haroonabad.

Mentioning that these were repeatedly reported to be water starved, the CJP hoped that the treated water would meet series of water related requirements of the people.

Pondering whether the nation was really conscious about worth of natural resources at their disposal and also that these are finite, the CJP said it was high time that concrete measures were taken for the conservation of the same.

“Life can not be imagined without water and we need to value it for a better Pakistan,” he said. Reiterating that provision of fundamental rights to the people of Pakistan and to help resolve problems faced by people at grass root levels is a major responsibility of the Supreme Court, Justice Saqib Nisar said he holds no personal agenda but to realise his obligations towards the people of the country.

He also referred to positive response registered from across the country regarding Diamer Bhasha Dam Fund constituted by him adding that water resources in the northern areas of the country were a gift of Allah and needed to be efficiently conserved and adequately utilised.

CJP Mian Saqib Nisar expressed his satisfaction about the improvement he registered in Karachi in terms of hygienic situation and cleanliness.

Acknowledging that much room for improvement still exists, he said equal attention is needed to sustain the achievements made by the

Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) and other concerned departments during past six months. Earlier, Justice (retd) Amir Hani, chairman water commission, in his welcome address mentioned pace of development being made in terms of provision of clean water as well as sanitation with the hope that situation may definitely improve through proper monitoring and delivery of service by concerned departments.

Chief Justice of Sindh High Court Justice Ahmed Ali M Shaikh, Sindh Chief Secretary Azam Suleman Khan, IGP-Sindh Amjad Javed Salimi and other senior officials were also present on the occasion.
