GUJRANWALA: Political rivals Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) workers have violently clashed in Gujranwala.

Political workers of PML-N and PTI are independently using batons, stones and rods on each others despite presence of law enforcers in Sadhoki village, local media reported.

The clashes suddenly turned violent when PML-N workers in shape of rally entered in the premises of public gathering organised by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

PTI was organising the public gathering in connection with upcoming by-election in PP-100 Gujranwala-X to be held on July 26 after the seat fell vacant post assassination of Punjab Assembly legislator Rana Shamshad Ali Khan who belonged to ruling Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N).

Post emergence of local media reports, Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif took notice of the incident and directed CPO Gujranwala to submit report regarding the incident.

On the other hand, Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) ordered Returning Officers (ROs) to sent notices to both political parties over the violent clashes in the constituency. ECP also directed provincial government to ensure security arrangements for the upcoming by-election.

Heavy contingents of law enforcement agencies were called up by local administration while police started flag march in the affected area.
