Over 50 per cent of Palestinians in Gaza and occupied West Bank are jobless. The key reason behind rising employment is Israeli war imposed on the people of Palestine.

The International Labour Organisation said that half a million jobs had already been lost since Oct 7, when Israel launched its military offensive against the Palestinians in Gaza.

The unemployment rate likely to jump to 57 per cent if the offensive continues until the end of March.

ILO’s Regional Director for Arab States Ruba Jaradat said that the destruction of infrastructure and schools, hospitals and business in Gaza had ruined the entire economic sectors, paralyzing labour market activity, with untold consequences on the livelihoods of Palestinians for generations to come.

He further said that in Gaza some 200,000 jobs had been lost, accounting for about two-thirds of total employment in the enclave.

According to the report, almost lockdown conditions in West Bank with more than 650 permanent and temporary checkpoints having significant negative effects on the economy. It further said that over 300,000 Palestinian jobs, or about a third of total employment, have already been lost there.
