Niqab-wearing student barred from entering Lahore school

A niqab-wearing student was allegedly prevented from entering the Lahore Grammar School owing to her attire on Tuesday.

A Twitter user had posted that Farwa Munir, an engineering student, had been invited at an event by the private school as a guest.

However, when she reached the school’s gate, she had not been allowed to enter the premises because of her niqab.

Human Rights Minister Shireen Mazari took notice of the Tweet, by urging Punjab education minister to take action against those responsible.

“Shameful. I don’t wear the niqab but I will defend everyone’s right to choose to wear it. And if we believe in freedom of choice we must respect the rights of those who choose to wear the niqab.

She added that the provincial minister of education must take note of this incident at LGS.

On October 3o, the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) education ministry had banned entry of men to events which are meant for girls while media coverage — including on social media — will not be allowed either.

This had been directed by the K-P Elementary and Secondary Education ministry.
