Hurriyat leader Geelani detained in Kashmir

SRINAGAR: Indian police on Friday arrested pro-independence leader Syed Ali Geelani from his residence in Indian occupied Kashmir.

A huge contingent of police party showed up outside Geelani’s residence Friday morning and arrested him the moment he stepped outside to leave for his scheduled Islamabad program.

Earlier, in the seminar, Geelani had annocuced that he would offer Friday prayers at Islamabad “if he was a free man”.

Clashes Break Out

The angry youths pelted stones on police and paramilitary personnel deployed in the area.

The pitched battles, which left several people injured, were on at the time of filing of this report in Lal Chowk and Old town areas.

The octogenarian leader was taken into custody and detained at Police Station Humhama.
