ISLAMABAD: Leader of the Opposition Shehbaz Sharif has said that the Speaker had violated the Constitution under the guise of OIC conference.

Opposition leader Shehbaz Sharif, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and PDM chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman also reached the court on the occasion of hearing the petition filed by the Supreme Court to stop the political meeting before the no-confidence motion.

On the occasion, Shehbaz Sharif said that the government deliberately did not convene the meeting and tried to trap the opposition.

Chairman PPP Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said that the government has resorted to violating the Constitution to escape the no-confidence motion.

Bilawal appreciated the court notice of attack on Sindh House and said that he hoped that the judiciary would support Constitution, law and democracy, not any political party.

Maulana Fazlur Rehman, head of the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), said that when PTI was bringing MPs by ship to form government then it was a matter of conscience.

Meanwhile, Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Umar Ata Bandial has remarked hearing on petition of the Supreme Court Bar Association that this is an internal matter of the National Assembly, therefore it would be better to fight the battle of the assembly within the parliament.

A two-member bench of the Supreme Court, headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan, was hearing the Supreme Court Bar Association’s plea to stop the political meeting before the no-confidence motion.

Other political leaders including Shehbaz Sharif, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Maulana Fazlur Rehman also reached the court in connection with the hearing.

During the hearing, the counsel for the Supreme Court Bar said that the Speaker was asked to convene a meeting on March 25. Under Article 95, a sitting has to be convened within 14 days. The Speaker has no right to delay more than 14 days. The meeting cannot be adjourned indefinitely until a decision is taken on the confidence.

The Chief Justice of Pakistan said that the court has to see that no one is deprived of voting due to any event, voting is a constitutional right of the members, the court is not persuaded to interfere in the proceedings of the assembly, the court only wants the right is not affected.
