Campaign calling Erdogan to bring caliphate back to Turkey launched

Istanbul: A campaign has been lanuched in Turkey calling President Erdogan to reintroduce Caliphate in the country.

Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the founder of modern had abolished the caliphate an institution of Ottoman empire during the last century.

The call has been made in the latest weekly edition of Gercek Kayat, a publication of Daily Yeni Safak.

The magazine ran headline “Lets Rally for Caliphate” with a sub-title addressing President Erdogan” If not now, when, if not you, who”. The magazine cover also says: “Now Hagia Sophia and Turkey are free”.

The call came days after the historic Hagia Sophia was reverted to mosque by Turkey.

It has sparked a debate on the social media, where “caliphate in Turkey is trending”.
