NEW YORK: United States President Barack Obama on Monday said that the United States did not want a new cold war over the Ukraine conflict and ready to cooperate with Russia and Iran to resolve the Syrian issue.

While addressing the United Nations General Assembly meeting, Obama said, “The United States is prepared to work with any nation, including Russia and Iran, to resolve the conflicts.”

Obama argued it would be wrong to support a “tyrant” like Assad, but that Washington was ready to work with anyone ready to take on the militants’ threat, even Moscow and traditional US enemy Tehran.

He added that the sanctions imposed by western powers on Moscow in the wake of Russia´s intervention in Ukraine were meant to protect Kiev´s sovereignty not trigger conflict with Moscow.

The President Obama also called for ending the decades-old US embargo on Cuba during his speech.

Obama acknowledged that Washington´s Cuba policy had “failed to improve the lives of the Cuban people” but stressed that human rights remained a concern in relations with Havana.
