FRISCO: United States soccer star Clint Dempsey came up with two massive goals in a 2-1 victory in Gold Cup opener against Honduras.

Dempsey relieved the pressure of a difficult opening period by nodding home a rebound after 25 minutes to place the Americans in front. He doubled the lead shortly after the hour with a prototypical back-post header from an enticing cross by Michael Bradley. Carlos Discua rounded off a neat Honduran move after 69 minutes to thrust the outcome in doubt once more.

Honduras pressed hard in the closing minutes, but couldn’t find a second goal to scrape a point, and the U.S. held on for a big, if nervy, result.
