WASHINGTON: A fourth-floor apartment building balcony collapsed onto the sidewalk just blocks from the University of California, Berkeley campus early Tuesday, killing six young people.
According to details, a 21st-birthday party thrown by a group of visiting Irish college students turned tragic when the fifth-floor balcony they were crammed onto collapsed with a sharp crack, spilling them about 50 feet onto the pavement.
Six people were killed and seven seriously injured.
Authorities in California confirmed that seven others remain in hospital.
The students are believed to have been living temporarily in the US as part of a work exchange programme.
Around 700 Irish students are currently living in the San Francisco Bay Area, said Philip Grant, the Consul General of Ireland to the Western United States.
