CJP says Supreme Court won't be influenced by criticism

ISLAMABAD: A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Umar Ata Bandial restrained state officials from taking any unconstitutional action.

Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Umar Ata Bandial took suo motu notice of the political situation after Deputy Speaker National Assembly Qasim Suri rejected the opposition’s no-confidence motion without a vote on Sunday.

A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Omar Ata Bandial heard the case. The bench comprises Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar and Justice Ijaz-ul-Ahsan.

During the hearing, the Supreme Court restrained the state officials from taking any extra-constitutional action and said that there should be peace on the political parties and no extra-constitutional action should be taken.

The court issued notices to the defense secretary on the steps taken to maintain law and order in the country and the chief justice said that it was Ramazan ul Mubarak and he did not want to adjourn the hearing.

The Chief Justice said that no government body would act unconstitutionally, adding that political parties and government bodies should not benefit from this situation.

Justice Umar Ata Bandial ordered that law and order situation be maintained. This is the order of the court for today, he remarked.

The court directed the home secretary and secretary defense to inform the court about the law and order situation and the state agencies and provincial law enforcement agencies maintain law and order situation.

The Chief Justice directed to fix the petition of the PPP and said that the Supreme Court would review the steps taken by the Deputy Speaker.

The issue of election of Punjab Chief Minister was also discussed in the court. To which, the Chief Justice said that the protest of the members of the assembly has been registered.

Meanwhile, the Chief Justice said that the President is made a party in the suo motu notice. Tomorrow 63A will be heard and after that this matter would be heard as this is a very important issue, he observed.

Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar inquired as to why the session of Punjab Assembly was adjourned.

Azam Nazir Tarar said that the session of Punjab Assembly was adjourned due to poor law and order situation.
