Speaker adjourns NA session till Monday without tabling no-trust move

ISLAMABAD: National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser on Monday consulted with the Assembly Secretariat and Law Department on legal aspects in connection with the issue of no-confidence motion of opposition against the Prime Minister Imran Khan.

According to sources, the Speaker consulted the Legislative Department of the National Assembly Secretariat and sought his opinion on whether deviant members could be prevented from voting. To which, the Speaker was told that that no member can be stopped from voting as a law is clear in this connection.

They added that the Legislative Department informed the Speaker that Article 63-1A of the Constitution was very clear and action would be taken against the deviant member for violating the party policy later.

The Speaker asked whether action can be taken if the names of suspicious members were mentioned by the party leadership. To this, he was told that the role of the Speaker starts after the formal declaration from the party chairman.

The Speaker asked whether rolling could be given before voting on deviant members. On this, the Assembly Secretariat took the position that it is the prerogative of the Speaker to give a ruling  but the Constitution and law are clear on this.

Earlier on Sunday, Federal Minister for Planning Asad Umar had termed the coalition party PML-Q as a party of some districts of Punjab and said that Imran Khan a needed of Pakistan.

Addressing the Pakistan Overseas Conference, Asad Umar said that in the 2018 elections, PTI got the highest number of votes in urban areas of Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Sindh. The party also got the highest votes in Gilgit-Baltistan.

He said that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) is a party of all Pakistanis from Khyber to Karachi across the country while PML-Q is the party of some districts of Punjab, PML-N is the party of GT Road and PPP is the party of Sindh.

He termed Imran Khan as a need of Pakistan and said that after Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah and Liaquat Ali Khan, all the institutions were working together and would thwart the no-confidence motion of the opposition.

The federal minister said that India has been trying to put pressure on Pakistan and we must unite to keep the country strong. The country is facing internal challenges, he said adding that Pakistanis have to face difficult situations. The country needs to be united for success, he added.
