ISLAMABAD: President Dr Arif Alvi has bid a farewell to elephant Kaavan at the Marghazar Zoo.

The president visited the Marghazar Zoo, where he was briefed on shifting the Kaavan to a sanctuary in Cambodia.

Dr Alvi expressed good wishes for the elephant, hoping the animal would live a happy life in a sanctuary in Cambodia.

The president directed the staff at the Marghazar Zoo to ensure implementation on the animal rights set by the Wild Life Management Board.

In 1985, Kaavan arrived as a presidential gift from Sri Lanka.

Earlier this year, the Islamabad High Court had ruled to relocate Kaavan to a suitable outside Islamabad after the animal rights activists highlighted the poor treatment being meted out her at the zoo.

The government has chartered a special Russian cargo plane to fly Kaavan to Cambodia on November 29.
