LAHORE: A proper processing system in the country may help boost export of poultry products to $2.0 billion, believes University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) Vice Chancellor Prof Talat Naseer Pasha.

Talking to APP on Wednesday, he said poultry products had great export potential in Middle and Far-East countries, Central Asian Republics and Russia, as there was a ban on the European Union products in these countries. He said that export of poultry meat would also uplift the economic condition of poultry farmers.

Therefore, the government should pay heed to installing a processing system of poultry products in cooperation with the private sector. Responding to a question about the current low production rate of poultry meat, he said that overproduction might be a reason for it.

He said the livestock sector contributed 55 per cent to agricultural GDP and four per cent of that was coming from poultry sector. He said poultry was the most vibrant sector in Pakistan with an annual growth of 8-10 per cent. He also spoke about the constraints and problems of the livestock sector in the country.

The vice-chancellor said that the UVAS was closely working with Livestock and Dairy Development Department, Punjab, and private sector for the development of livestock and allied sectors.
