ISLAMABAD: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB)  kate Sunday arrested Captain (retd) Safdar, the son-in-law of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, from outside Islamabad airport.

Maryam Nawaz, daughter of Nawaz Sharif, and her husband, Captain (retd) Safdar arrived at Benazir Bhutto International Airport, late on Sunday night.

The six-member NAB team waited outside Rawal lounge for the arrest of Capt (retd) Safdar, as the airport staff stopped them from entering the lounge.

Safdar’s arrest came minutes after Maryam Nawaz departed from the airport premises alone.

A number of PML-N leaders including Asif Kirmani, Marriyum Aurangzeb and Tariq Fazal Chaudhry were present at the airport.

Scores of PML-N workers gathered outside the airport, who protested against the arrest of Captain (retd) Safdar. They chanted slogans in favour of the party leadership and kept the way for the vehicle, in which Safdar was being taken to NAB headquarters in Islamabad, blocked for some time.

The workers seemed adamant not to let the vehicle pass through, despite repeated calls by the party leaders present outside the airport.

Confirming the arrest of Safdar, PML-N leader Asif Kirmani said Maryam Nawaz and Captain (retd) Safdar came as per their schedule, however, Maryam left, while Safdar was taken into custody by NAB officials, who have left the airport.

“He [Safdar] is in high spirit, I kept discussing Begum Kulsoom Nawaz’s health with him,” he said, while speaking to Geo News.

He said we didn’t call the workers, they came on their own. “I tried to convince them, but we get to see some emotional scenes in such cases. However, the workers agreed and left the way open for NAB vehicle.”

Asked about their next course of action, Kirmani said they would take whatever legal way was available to them.

It has been learnt that Safdar will stay under custody of the NAB for the night, before being presented at the accountability court Monday morning.

Earlier while referring to corruption references filed against them, Maryam Nawaz said the world knows this isn’t accountability, however, added that she would appear before the court to try the justice system.
