Lebanon may face food shortage as wheat stockpile destroyed in Beirut blast

Islamabad: Lebanon’s ambassador to Pakistan, Vizcan Kovalekin, has said the blast at the Beirut port destroyed a large stockpile of wheat.

In an exclusive interview with Geo News, Lebanese Ambassador Vizcan Kovalekin said that due to the destruction of a large stockpile of wheat at the port, we may face food shortages.

He said the blast destroyed berths in the port of Beirut, which is being called Beirut Shima, like Hiroshima.

The Lebanese ambassador said the Beirut bombing severely damaged the Foreign Ministry building, blowing off a roof. The bodies are still buried under the rubble and efforts are being made to pull them out, while Beirut’s hospitals have no space for the wounded, he said.

On Tueaday, at least 100 people were killed and over 4,000 injured in an huge explosion ripped through a warehouse storing highly explosive material in the port city.

According to Arab media, the explosion was so powerful that it was heard 200 kilometers away in Cyprus.

Initial reports suggest that the explosion was occured in warehouse of ammonium nitrate.

However, investigation has been launched to find the exact cause that triggered the blast.

President Michel Aoun took to Twitter and said it was unacceptable that 2, 750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate was stored unsafely.
