Iranian President arrives in Islamabad

ISLAMABAD: Iranian President Dr Hassan Rouhani has arrived in Islamabad on two-day official visit to Pakistan to discuss ways to further strengthen bilateral relations.

The Iranian President is visiting Pakistan at the invitation of Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, which is significant after lifting of sanctions on Iran that has opened new avenues for enhancing economic interaction.

The Foreign Office, in a statement, said the leadership would have an exchange of views on strengthening bilateral relations.

This will be President Rouhani’s first visit to Pakistan as the President of Iran. He will be accompanied by a high-level delegation comprising ministers, senior officials and businessmen.

During his stay in Islamabad, the Iranina President will hold meetings with President Mamnoon Hussain and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

Cooperation on regional and international issues of mutual concern will also be discussed.

The Foreign Office said relations between the two countries were rooted in a long history of mutual trust, based on cultural, linguistic and religious bonds.

The visit of Dr Rouhani would further deepen the existing fraternal ties between the two countries, the statement said.

Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif had visited Iran in May 2014 and January 2016.
