Govt to hold census in 2016: president

ISLAMABAD: President Mamnoon Hussain on Thursday stressed the need for keeping balance between population and resources for the development of the country and said the government would hold population census in 2016.

 ‘Pakistan is the sixth largest populated country and added that a coordinated policy needed to address the issue of increasing population growth,’ said the president while addressing Population Summit 2015 in Islamabad.

He called upon the Ulema and civil society to play their due role in creating awareness among the people on the issue. He said national consensus on controlling the rapid population growth is good sign.

He suggested formation of a Task Force, which would review the matters relating to population in every six months.

Mamnoon Hussain said exact statistics of population is imperative for achieving the development targets. He said for this purpose the government will hold population census next year.

The president said the government had initiated numerous development projects. He said China Pakistan Economic Corridor Project (CPEC) is very important. He said under the CPEC the work is continuing on projects like Gwadar port, Gwadar airport, motorways, and energy projects. He said the Government is determined to complete these projects despite resource constraints.
