Govt consults ECP after SC opinion on presidential reference

Islamabad: The government has decided to consult the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) following the Supreme Court’s opinion related to the Senate elections.

According to a local TV, federal ministers led by Science Minister Fawad Chaudhry will visit the ECP. Constitutional experts will also accompany the federal ministers.

It may be mentioned here that after the Supreme Court opinion on the presidential reference all the responsibility with regard to the Senate elections rests with the ECP.

Earlier in the day, the Supreme Court of Pakistan in its opinion on the presidential reference related to the Senate elections observed that the voting cannot be held through an open ballot.

The five-member larger bench hearing presidential reference observed that the Senate elections are subject to the Constitution therefore the upper house polls would be held in accordance with the Constitution.

Justice Afridi disagreed with the 4-1 majority opinion.

The apex court remarked that the Senate elections would be held through secret ballot as per the Article 226 of the Constitution.

The Election Commission of Pakistan can make all measures for a transparent elections, the larger bench observed.

It added that the ECP may use technology to check corruption.
