First-ever LG polls in Islamabad tomorrow

ISLAMABAD: The first-ever local government (LG) elections in the federal capital Islamabad will be held tomorrow.

Electioneering for the polls ended on Saturday night at 12am. Candidates made their last-ditch efforts by carrying out door-to-door canvassing to convince the voters in their favour.

The capital territory has been divided into 50 Union Councils (UCs) and 640 polling stations have been set up at 326 buildings, of which 62 buildings have been declared most sensitive. The most sensitive polling stations will be guarded by Army and Rangers personnel.

At least 7,752 policemen including 3,720 personnel of Islamabad police will perform their duties on the polling day. As many as 2,400 candidates are vying for the seats of chairman, vice chairman and councilors.

Meanwhile, the Election Commission of Pakistan has completed all arrangements in connection with the polls. Inspector General of Police Islamabad Tahir Alam Khan directed all police officials to ensure elaborate security arrangements in the federal capital on the eve of polling day. The IGP reviewed the law and order situation finalized an effective strategy regarding security for the elections in Islamabad.
