Ex-Olympian Naveed Alam dies of cancer

KARACHI: Naveed Alam, the member of winning hockey team of the 1994 World Cup and former Olympian passed away here on Tuesday after losing a battle against cancer.

Naveed Alam was diagnosed with blood cancer earlier this month.

His daughter said that the former Olympian’s condition deteriorated after chemotherapy on Monday night at Lahore’s Shaukat Khanum Hospital. Later, he was shifted to the intensive-care unit (ICU).

Earlier, the former hockey player had appealed to the federal and provincial governments for funds for his treatment.

Later, Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar announced to provide financial aid for the cancer treatment of Naveed Alam.
