Apple Inc. is in a process to bring one of its most ambitious projects to market: a series of cellular modem chips, which will replace components from longtime partner  Qualcomm Inc.

Over an half a decade in the making, Apple’s in-house modem system is all set to  debut next spring.

People familiar with the matter said that the technology will be a part of the iPhone SE, the firm’s entry-level smartphone that will be updated in 2025 for the first time since 2022.

A modem is a key device of any cell phone, letting the phone connect to cell towers to make calls and link up with the internet.

The Apple’s first version of the component will be followed by more generations which become increasingly more advanced.

People said that the tech-giant company intends to ultimately overtake Qualcomm’s technology by 2027.
