CJP says Supreme Court won't be influenced by criticism

ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Umar Ata Bandial has remarked hearing on petition of the Supreme Court Bar Association that this is an internal matter of the National Assembly, therefore it would be better to fight the battle of the assembly within the parliament.

A two-member bench of the Supreme Court, headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan, was hearing the Supreme Court Bar Association’s plea to stop the political meeting before the no-confidence motion.

Other political leaders including Shehbaz Sharif, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Maulana Fazlur Rehman also reached the court in connection with the hearing.

During the hearing, the counsel for the Supreme Court Bar said that the Speaker was asked to convene a meeting on March 25. Under Article 95, a sitting has to be convened within 14 days. The Speaker has no right to delay more than 14 days. The meeting cannot be adjourned indefinitely until a decision is taken on the confidence.

The Chief Justice of Pakistan said that the court has to see that no one is deprived of voting due to any event, voting is a constitutional right of the members, the court is not persuaded to interfere in the proceedings of the assembly, the court only wants the right is not affected.

Justice Umar Ata Bandial remarked that this is an internal matter of the National Assembly. It would be better to fight the battle of the Assembly inside the Assembly.

The Chief Justice of Pakistan said that political parties should tell what they want? Political parties should show their political power in the parliament. The court has to play the role of mediator between the political leadership so that democracy can continue.

Justice Umar Ata Bandial further said that people will not be allowed to stop any voter by bringing people, try not to hold a meeting at D-Chowk, sit together and create consensus.
